A collection of all nine Bruckner symphonies played by the orchestra most associated with his music – the Vienna Philharmonic – under the direction of nine different conductors.

MORE INFORMATION

Among the treasures in the archives of the Vienna Philharmonic are ten letters that the composer addressed to the orchestra. One of them is an expression of his euphoric gratitude following the world premiere of his Eighth Symphony under Hans Richter in the Musikverein on 18 December 1892. “Deeply touched,” he asks if he may be permitted to thank the conductor and the orchestra “from the bottom of my heart for the glorious performance” of the work: “Hip, hip, hooray!” Among the other symphonies that the Wiener Philharmoniker premiered were his Fourth (“Romantic”) in 1881, the revised Third in 1890 and the second (“Viennese”) version of the First.
