Besides his modesty, his humanity, his musical taste, and his honesty to the music, three words come to mind when one thinks of Haitink and his orchestra: Sound, Trust and Magic. Together they left a vast recorded legacy which is now collected in one edition for the first time on 113 CDs + 4 DVDs with original sleeves and presented with a 170pp book (EN/FR/DE/JP) with authoritative notes by Niek Nelissen, a foreword by Patricia Haitink and tributes from many fellow musicians. This 1970 recording was made quadraphonically in Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw and was praised by Gramophone for having “that special clarity which comes from a close balance”.

For this release Rainer Maillard at Emil Berliner Studios has used the original, four-track quadraphonic master tape to make a new stereo mix sent directly to the cutter head. This preserves a pure analogue path throughout. The Philips engineers of the 1970s would similarly have mixed the four front and rear channels before cutting but this downmix would have resulted in a two-track stereo copy for mastering, whereas here the lacquer is cut directly from a ‘live’ mix into stereo from the four Quad channels.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0504/9797/8559/files/028948718078HaitinkMahler5_Adagio10_3D_3000x3000_4c01d157-acb3-48d3-94de-d3b880280aaf.png?v=1776823153
