Over 35 years after his legendary first recording of Bach’s famous Christmas Oratorio for Archiv Production in 1987, Sir John Eliot Gardiner performed this piece, first heard at church services in Leipzig between Christmas Day 1734 and Epiphany 1735, live with his ensembles Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists at the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields in London on two evenings in December 2022 called by The Times: “a festive triumph”.
