Andras Schiff

Andras Schiff - Complete Decca Recordings (78CD Box Set)

Born in Budapest in 1953, Sir András Schiff studied piano at the Liszt Ferenc Academy with Pál Kadosa, György Kurtág and Ferenc Rados; and in London with George Malcolm. Having collaborated with the world’s leading orchestras and conductors, he now focuses primarily on solo recitals, play-directing and conducting.

Schiff is one of the most ‘complete’ musicians on the concert and recording circuits today, and accordingly this edition represents the breath of his artistry – solo pianist, concerto soloist, concertante artist, chamber musician, and lieder/song accompanist.

Among his chamber music recordings, Schiff is particularly proud of the Beethoven Violin Sonatas he recorded with Sandor Végh. Out of print for a long time, and only issued in Japan, these are being made available internationally for the first time, on CD and digitally. With Végh, Schiff also recorded his Mozart concerto cycle, in spite of some initial hesitation from Decca: "they wanted me to use a more established name from their roster. But I held out for Végh, and I’m very glad I did: I loved making music with him – much more than with any of the star conductors who often have very little instinct for Mozart." More Mozart comes in the form of the complete piano sonatas – his first solo recordings for Decca – as well as a selection of music for violin and piano (with Yuuko Shiokawa) and four CDs’ worth of music recorded on Mozart’s own piano, some of it with his teacher and mentor, George Malcolm, whom Schiff describes as "a colossal influence on me, and I’m so glad that life brought us together".

19th century concertos come in the form of Chopin 2, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Brahms 1, Dohnányi’s Nursery Variations, and a live recording of the Dvořák. In chamber music, Schiff is joined by the Takács Quartet, the New Vienna Octet, colleagues from Musiktage Mondsee; and in a rare recording with oboist Heinz Holliger of 20th century music by Britten, Carter, Doráti and Holliger himself. As Sir András Schiff turns 70 (in December 2023), this edition celebrates an artist who has made a significant contribution to shaping Decca’s history through an array of artistic endeavours.
