William Steinberg

Complete Recordings on Command Classics (17CD Box Set)

What a life story William Steinberg had. Born 1899 in Cologne he became assistant to Otto Klemperer, and after Klemperer left, Principal Conductor. In 1936 Steinberg had to leave Germany and helped to train the Palestine Symphony Orchestra, which later would be known as the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. There he was discovered by Arturo Toscanini who helped him to start an impressive career in the United States which led him to the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, which he made into one of the most interesting Orchestras that time.

Collected together for the first time are his complete recordings made for Command Classics with 11 of 17 albums new to CD. Included in this set are the complete symphonies of Beethoven and Brahms as well as works by Schubert, Wagner, Bruckner, Tchaikovsky and many more. This original-jackets, limited edition set is accompanied by a 48pp booklet, with new essay by Richard Evidon.
