Generations of music-lovers would automatically associate Sir Georg Solti with Chicago and Vienna, unsurprising given the enduring value of the recordings he made there with two of the world’s great orchestras. Yet it was London that proved decisive in shaping the conductor’s career and private life and he was to become a British citizen in 1972. He built the Covent Garden Opera Company from promising newcomer to outstanding leader in the league of international opera houses during his tenure as musical director, and served as principal conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, from 1979 to 1983, but his work as guest conductor in London began long before.
