Der ferne Klang... Orchestral Works & Songs by Franz Schreker (2CD)
Musical life in the German-speaking world of the early twentieth century was extraordinarily vibrant and varied. As a number of composers gradually broke free from the stranglehold of Romanticism exploring free tonality and experimenting with novel sonorities (foremost among them Schoenberg, Berg and Webern), on the opposite side of the artistic divide were those composers who, even if they pushed the limits of traditional tonality to their furthest extreme, were reluctant to abandon the major-minor system: composers such as Franz Schreker. In this collection of the composer’s orchestral and vocal works, conductor/pianist Christoph Eschenbach, a staunch supporter of the composer’s music, has chosen as his illustrious soloists, the Israeli soprano Chen Reiss and the German baritone Matthias Goerne.
