This Original Jackets Collection presents Lorin Maazel’s complete recordings for Deutsche Grammophon and is released ahead of the tenth anniversary (2024) of his death.
Invited at 9 years old to conduct the Los Angeles Philharmonic by Stokowski, and then at 11 to conduct Toscanini’s NBC Symphony Orchestra Lorin Maazel was one of the greatest conductors of the last century. He started to record for the Deutsche Grammophon in 1957 with a celebrated Tchaikovsky album. His first music directorship was with the Deutsche Oper in (West-) Berlin. In the following years many recordings with the Berliner Philharmoniker and the RSO Berlin were added to his discography. In his long career he was the musical director of the Orchestre National de Paris, General Manager of the Vienna State Opera, Chief conductor of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Music Director of the New York Philharmonic and held many more prestigious positions. From 1980 till 1986 he conducted the New Years Concert from the Golden Hall in Vienna with the Wiener Philharmoniker, returning 1994, 1996, 1999 and 2005.
Ahead of the tenth anniversary of his death (2024), Deutsche Grammophon present his complete recordings for the Yellow Label in one edition, for the first time.
