While the legendary Festspielhaus remained silent this summer, the Bayreuth Festival marked what would have been its opening day with a special concert at Haus Wahnfried, once Wagner’s home and now a museum devoted to his life and work.

The performances were relayed via video screen to an audience of 400 seated in the gardens outside the main building and were captured by BR-Klassik (Bavarian Broadcasting) in one of the few recordings to have been made at this venue.

Deutsche Grammophon, in cooperation with the Bayreuth Festival and BR-Klassik, is now set to release Bayreuth 2020: Wagner at Wahnfried. The album features the Siegfried Idyll, performed by the Festival’s Music Director Christian Thielemann and members of the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra, and the Wesendonck Lieder, with Finnish soprano Camilla Nylund as soloist.
